Steel Silo Engineering Technology Attachment

Steel silo is a structure with large variable load, which needs to be followed to requirements as below in the process of construction and use.

Steel Silo Foundation Section

  1. Embedded Part: Embedded Part is the important rooting point of stiffeners of inside silo as well as the only connecting point between steel silo and reinforced concrete foundation, its manufacture and installation must be strictly constructed according to company drawing, its quantity, specification, position and method of installation must be also determined by company drawing. If it’s with cone, embedded part of cone must be same as above. The number of embedded part is equal to the number of stiffener, which couldn’t be constructed if they mismatch in number. 
  2. Silo Bottom Plate Cornice: Silo Bottom Plate shall be with 800mm wide cornice of outer silo. Upper plane of cornice shall bear 40kn/㎡ of load capacity. Cornice is a supporting platform when manufacturing silo. There’s the steel structure frame about 300mm away from outside diameter of silo with several rolling wheels which are supported at undercut to be turned forwards with rotating of related equipments during manufacturing process in order to accomplish spiral rising of silo body. Walking corridor shall be installed at outside of frame to adjust frame properly under construction.  
  3. Bottom Plate of Inner Silo: Bottom Plate of Inner Silo shall be with about 2m wide circular construction platform which requires removing all of production equipments or other structures that may disturb silo manufacture, for example, oversized cone bucket opening and reversed cone bucket, etc. In the production of bottom plate of steel silo, cornice of outer silo, embedded parts and bottom plate of inner silo shall be kept at the same level elevation, namely on the bottom plate of steel silo must not be with prominent beams and other structures. If requirements above can’t be met, other method such as temporary platform built in inner silo or direct hoisting may be properly chosen to ensure works, but there shall be extra cost. 
  4. Foundation Settlement Observation: The first filling silo includes 3 stages: first, fill up to 60% of silo, and keep for 20 days; second, fill up to 90% of silo, and keep for 20 days; third, fill up to 100% of silo, and keep for 1 month. Settlement observation shall be finished and recorded before filling the silo each time. Settlement records shall be delivered to construction side one copy. In use of silo, it shall be best possible of filling and discharging from center position of silo rather than from any side in order to keep silo body in the symmetrical, balanced, evenly distributed state. 
  5. Slope Filling of Inner Silo and Silo Bottom Waterproof: When slope filling, contacting place between filling materials and silo wall shall asphalt twice to play the role of anti-corrosion. Moreover, connecting place between silo bottom plate and outer silo wall shall build circular flashing slope which is 200mm wide and 300mm high and made of C15 plain concrete. The place contacting with silo shall use polyurethane sealing waterproofing materials. 

Steel Silo Body Section

  1. Silo Surface: Any welding on outer surface of silo must not be done, for example, weld other equipments or supports, etc. If welding is necessary, it should be informed of our company, drawings or construction methods may be provided in time. Because surface of silo body is made of two-sided galvanized coil and then welding must cause destruction of galvanized coating which makes silo rusty and unsafe in use. Any person is absolutely prohibited to climb upwards from the bite of silo wall because there is crucial position circumference stiffening rib exists. 
  2. Pressure of Inner Silo: Silo is designed to be structure of thin walls, which is used under normal pressure. It is strictly prohibited to produce more than 300PA negative pressure or more than 30,000PA positive pressure in use of the process. Silo shall be equipped with air pipe or other ventilation equipments to effectively release pressure of inner silo.
  3. Discharging from Side of Silo:When discharging from side of silo with related equipments, for example, air slide, etc., the principal of reclaiming from center of silo must be implemented. The behavior needs to be confirmed by our company. When punching the opening, it is strictly prohibited to cut off the stiffener in silo. 
  4. Stiffener of Inner Silo:Stiffener of inner silo is to transfer vertical load of storage materials and connect silo with foundation. When construction in inner silo, It is strictly prohibited to destroy stiffener. If some equipment is needed to weld to the stiffener, that should be informed of our company. By company consent, we may provide necessary drawings for construction side.   

Steel Silo Roof Section

  1. Load-bearing of Silo Roof:Silo roof is a structure of non load bearing member. When calculating on the Load-bearing of Silo Roof on design, only non concentrated load is considered, for example, snow load, live load of man or 2-3Ton equipment. Therefore all of respectively heavier equipment (≥3 ton) must not be applied on the roof, even if it has a support itself. If necessary, in use of all of respectively heavier equipment its load must be transferred to bite of silo wall through steel structure support, leg of wall and special fixture.  
  2. Auxiliary Hole of Silo Roof:Auxiliary hole may be punched according to construction side’s needs, but sealing and anti-raining should be cautiously added into consideration. Stiffener and guard rail under auxiliary holes are absolutely prohibited to be cut off. Ventilation holes and equipments of the roof shall be installed in order to release pressure of inner silo.
  3. Anticorrosion of Silo Roof:Anticorrosion of non-galvanized steel structure components of silo roof and supports should be checked before rain season’s coming, and regular maintenance and corrosion removal should be carried out on time. General practice for anticorrosion is coated with red lead, silver rust-proof paint and silver finish one time each after their surface treatment of rust removing. Attention: please do not paint again until the previous painting’s dry. 

Steel Silo's Construction Requirements

  • Construction Site: Construction site shall reach its platform access water, electricity and roads. The surrounding area of the platform must be compacted and leveled off. Construction area for projects that are needed to reel steel plate or manufacture cone bucket on the ground shall be separately required for convenient construction and hoisting.
  • Construction Electricity: According to the size of project, electricity consumption of the power for 40KW equipments each group shall be met. If the project includes the steel structure construction, extra 30KW power supply must be met. Power supply shall  be connected to the construction site within the scope of 30m. 
  • Temporary Platform: For construction of single silo or the last one of linking silo, it shall build temporary platform in order to play the role of carrying capacity of reeling equipment. Temporary platform must be strong and fast enough to load 40KN/m2. Its plane size is 4m×6m. Major scaffolding shall be built up by steel pipe and fastener structures, which spacing of stand pipe is 600mm, a layer of vertical and horizontal bracing must be laid with an interval of 1500mm each from + 0.00 and stand pipe pad at the bottom is 250 x 25 x 40 thick wood covered with 6mm steel plate or more than 40mm log plate.
